Say Goodbye to the Sweater Avalanche

Here in Alabama, our winters are mild, but we still love a good sweater. We have seen more than our fair share of sweater storage problems over the years, so we’ve put together our favorite ways to keep them tidy and accessible.

  1. When you only have a few pieces, we recommend sweaters in drawers. If you're trying to store sweaters without spending money on organizational supplies, the easiest thing to do is to fold them neatly and put them in a stack of one or two in a drawer. But this is only if you have plenty of drawer space, and not an abundance of sweaters. We do not want this situation to become “sweater soup,” so don’t be tempted to stack them more than a few inches deep. Expandable drawer dividers can keep these in-drawer stacks from sliding around.

  2. When you have plenty of shelving in a closet, let’s do sweaters in stacks. To keep the stacks tidy, you’ll want dividers. When you shop, pay attention to what material the divider is intended for. We like these for wood shelves, and these are great for wire shelves. If you want a bit of a splurge, these clear dividers are very pretty and can be used to hold up a purse/clutch selection too.

  3. Sweaters in baskets is an option for your closet shelving as well. File the sweaters vertically and pack them in tight to keep them from unfolding. Label your baskets with clip on labels (white plastic, grey or oatmeal, clear, silver/gold/black/birch/white) so you don’t forget where they are!

One last note when it comes to sweater storage: make sure that the way you store them allows you to NOT forget that you own them. I don’t love moving seasonal clothing to the attic or other area because it is very easy to overlook a bin. Plus it’s a lot of work! Make your closet work really hard for you year-round if you can!
